Music = Hobby
Recently I have been challenged on the way I view playing in a band, and "trying to make it". I normally just explain "I have bills, I have planned a life out that has not included touring with a band." Most people seem to understand. Today I ran across a great article written by Steve Albini. If you don't know who he is, sorry. Anyway, go read this, it may help those who think they know how I should be living my life when it comes to playing in a band:

didn't you used to be in ester drang?
ya I did for a year, when I was graduating College, and had no job going on, I quit when I found a job.
oh cool...when did you join the starlight mints?
Never, read the archives jerk
i could not agree more.
reality is a hard pill to swallow...
playing in a band is rad and all, dont get me wrong, i've done it since i was 12...
but it is next to impossible to make a living...at least not a comfortable one.
koudos to those who can do it and have made it, but obviously they are few and far between...
ok. its off my chest.
now all i got left to say is:
p00t.
i heard that you and dave terry started aqueduct, and then you quit the band. is that true?
Eric you must STFU N008!!!
without touring with cheyenne you would never have come to that conclusion.
last time i'll say it: 'let the fucking begin'
I got a few phone calls from record labels once. It was for a horrible band and I could not be happier that nothing came of it. I am glad to have realized early on that music should be fun. I play when I want and take nothing from any whining industry types. Brian was around in those days. I only wish Sweatband had made the cut, just imagine the limo rides we could have ruined. If you think you are going to make it, make sure and play the lottery every chance you get. The odds of winning are about as good as "making it”. Speaking of the lottery this is awesome: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/4290820.stm
